The Speciality Equipment Market Association's (SEMA) annual event in Las Vegas has earned a reputation for being a motor show like no other.
Instead of the production-ready new metal, the focus here is on outrageous concepts. Here is our round-up of the star creations manufacturers have come up with for this year's show.
Mazda MX-5 Speedster/Spyder Concepts
Mazda has shown two concepts at SEMA: the Mazda MX-5 Speedster concept and the Mazda MX-5 Spyder concept. The Speedster pays particular attention to lightweight performance, with a nod to the lightweight roadsters of the 1950s. With weight saving in mind, even the windscreen is replaced by a wind deflector. The Spyder is also a retro-inspired concept, but with a focus on hand-made luxury elements like those found in the sports convertibles of yesteryear, including leather interior trim and a bespoke silver paint job.
Nissan has showcased its new N Attack performance package for the GT-R. Developed during Nissan’s time at the Nürburgring with the GT-R, the N Attack package offers suspension and bodywork upgrades, a larger rear spoiler and heavily bolstered bucket seats. The package will be offered in two formats: a street-friendly package and a track-dedicated set-up.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' tuning arm Mopar has unveiled an all-wheel-drive version of the Dodge Challenger muscle car. It is based on the GT version of the Challenger muscle car and is strictly billed as a one-off for now. It is one of more than a dozen models from Mopar at SEMA, with Chrysler, Fiat, Dodge and RAM models all getting the Mopar treatment.
Bisimoto Ford Mustang Ecoboost
Ford has collaborated with Ontario-based Bisimoto Engineering to create a 900bhp Mustang, powered by Ford’s 2.3-litre four-cylinder Ecoboost engine. With a host of engineering upgrades, the Bisimoto is the most powerful Mustang on display, while the matt black paintwork, aerodynamic body kit and large rear spoiler ensure that it also packs visual appeal among the eight-strong Mustang line-up planned by Ford and various other tuning companies.
Jeep Wrangler Red Rock
The Wrangler is perhaps the most common car at SEMA, and official tuning partner Mopar got in on the act with a special limited-edition version called Red Rock. The model celebrates 50 years of the Easter Jeep Safari event and is limited to just 50 units. The Red Rock is designed to be the ultimate off-road Wrangler, complete with 35in tyres, rock bars, a winch and an optional lift kit.
