Currently reading: Mahindra e2o electric city car to launch in UK in April

The successor to the G-Wiz will be priced from £13,000 to £16,000 and is thought to have a fully-electric range of 75 miles

The Mahindra e2o, the successor to the G-Wiz, is coming to the UK in April this year, priced from £13,000.

The electric city car will be an upgraded version of the e2o model that is already on sale in India, featuring more safety equipment and a higher quality interior, but it's thought to have a similar claimed electric range of 75 miles.

Full specification is yet to be confirmed, but the manufacturer told Autocar the two-door, four-seat vehicle will wear the Mahindra badge and be priced from £13,000 to £16,000, depending on the trim level. That price range makes it more expensive than the Renault Twizy, which starts at £6895, but cheaper than cars like the Renault Zoe and Nissan Leaf, which cost around £18,445 and £25,790 respectively.

It was previously thought that the e20 would cost less than £10,000, but the battery will not be sold on a separate lease deal so the price has increased. A three-year warranty for the battery comes as standard, with two extra years available as an option.

Arvind Mathew, head of Mahindra's electric vehicle division, said: “The Mahindra e2o is a savvy electric car that redefines sustainable urban driving.

"We designed the e2o, as well as our complete sales and service model, to be more convenient and flexible in keeping with the way our UK customers live and work.”

The e2o will be built at Mahindra’s factory in Bangalore and customers will be able to purchase it online, rather than through a dealer, with the first UK deliveries expected in May.

The Indian spec e2o is 3280mm long, 1514mm wide and 1560mm high, with a 1958mm wheelbase and kerb weight of 830kg, but the weight is expected to increase with the added safety equipment in the UK model. It has a top speed of around 50mph, and the 6.4kWh lithium ion battery has 25bhp and 39lb ft of instantly available torque, and takes five hours to charge from empty.

17bhp, the option of no doors, and a chassis tuned by RenaultSport - is the Twizy a sensible or foolish used buy?

Shame the only dealership is in Chiswick

I quite fancied one of these, looked at Autocar India's test and the video of the owner's experience of actually driving one, so I looked at Mahindra's UK website to check the car out and sign up for information. I've just calculated that with a 75 mile range I'd have to re-charge it about 7 times to get home from their only dealership and, as for any warranty or servicing, their mobile teams would be hard pressed to get to me in under a day.
Since Mahindra also own Ssang-Yong they may just sell through those dealerships for those of us who don't live close to Chiswick where the E20 dealership is based.

I don't think it will be

I don't think it will be tested by Euro NCAP, as it will probably be classed as a quadracycle, not a car.

Weight

At 850kg it'll be to heavy to be classed as a quadricycle, so will have to be M1 classification.

It would have been a success at £5k

I doubt they'll sell a single unit at £13k. Have they not seen how much proper EV you can get for that sort of money from Renault or Nissan?

Can't wait to see their Euro NCAP rating.
