If a road version of the iconic Ford GT40 or cutting-edge GT is beyond your budget, how about a Lego recreation for £29.99?

The Ford GT and GT40 racing cars that were victorious in the 2016 and 1966 Le Mans 24-hour races respectively are being honoured with Lego versions.

Ford’s two most famous racing sports cars have been designed in collaboration with the Blue Oval’s design and licensing teams.

The GT and GT40 will be available as a set that also includes racing driver figurines, a chequered flag and a winner’s trophy.

The GT40 MkII took first place in the 1966 Le Mans 24 Hours with Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon driving. Half a century later, the GT of Sébastien Bourdais, Joey Hand and Dirk Müller claimed victory in the GTE Pro category at the famous endurance race.

Dave Pericak, global director of Ford Performance, said: “Many people in my team grew up with the legend of Ford’s history-making 1966 victory and experienced the excitement of building and design for the first time through Lego bricks.

“This kit is a powerful way to tell our Le Mans story and will hopefully inspire the race drivers, engineers and designers of the future.”

Leading Lego’s design team was Craig Callum, a former car designer who races a Ford Model A hot rod in his spare time. Callum helped to develop 10 prototypes, from which the definitive versions of the GT and GT40 were selected.

He said: “This was a dream project with a lot of pressure. The Ford GT40 is one of the most iconic racing cars of all time, and the new Ford GT is just incredible. We know these models will be closely scrutinised for authenticity.”

The new model set, part of the Lego Speed Champions range, will be available to order from Lego’s online shop from 1 March 2017 at a recommended retail price of £29.99.

A Ford Mustang Lego set is also available, alongside a Ford F-150 Raptor with a trailer and a Ford Model A hot rod.
