Currently reading: Mercedes-Benz to recall up to 75,000 UK cars over fire risk

Several popular Mercedes models, including the C-Class, E-Class and GLA, are being recalled worldwide

Up to 75,000 units of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Mercedes-Benz CLA, Mercedes-Benz GLA and Mercedes-Benz GLC will be recalled in the UK because of a potential fire risk.

The affected models, all built between 2015 and 2017, form part of a larger recall which affects over a million cars worldwide.

In documents filed to the US government, it was revealed that repeated attempts to start a car which won't turn over could cause a current limiter in the starter motor to overheat and melt other parts. According to the documents, Mercedes began investigating the problem last June following reports of 'thermally damaged' current limiters.

A total of 51 fires have been reported worldwide, with 30 in the United States alone. Mercedes says there have been no reports of injury.

Mercedes owners will be notified later this month if their car is affected, and again when replacement parts are available, which is anticipated to be July. Dealers will take about an hour to rectify the issue, and will install another fuse to prevent fires. All work will be free of charge.

A Mercedes spokesman said the firm "couldn't comment" on whether any UK owners had been affected by the issue, but said that up to "75,000 cars in the UK" would be affected.

In a statement, Daimler AG said that on affected cars, "the starting current limiter could overload during unique conditions during the starting procedure." The statement confirms that when the engine is damaged and cannot crank, "a very high electric current can flow through the starting current limiter causing it to overheat".

doh what a bunch of moaners

Mercedes have mobilo assistance you call them if it doesn't start, you don't sit there for hours on on end trying, if it doesn't start there must be a reason...you ask...you make Mercedes fix it, not blow it up by keep trying....

1974 Austin

I had a 1974 Austin 1300GT that I had to crank for 3 or 4 minutes sometimes before it would start. Never caught fire, better built than a Mercedes. Your logic, not mine!

Idiot customers not Mercedes

Another example of a car company having to cater for the lowest common denominator customer! This is only a potential issue if you just keep trying and trying and trying to crank an engine without ever thinking what you are doing/why else won't it start.......

It's barely a year old, I would keep trying because I EXPECT the car to WORK.

A prime example of German quality

Not that it was needed, but this is a prime example of how poorly Mercs are designed and built, while this particular example shows that some of their cars could be a major hazard by catching fire, putting people's lives in danger.

What a stupid comment.

What a stupid comment.
Is it really a stupid comment? people are so dense that they still believe German reliability is second to none whereas anyone with 2 brain cells will tell you that Asian cars are the best in reliability. These German cars are about the same for reliability as their European peers. What he is saying is the truth and sooner people research the topic the sooner they will realise this.

Another stupid comment from two stupid people.

What a Great Quote....Not!

So you believe Asian cars are far superior to Not just German cars but the rest of the world......Funny that, If I recall excuse the pun, was it not Toyota that had a throttle problem where they had to recall thousands of vehicles world wide because the throttle kept jamming on, if that's not dangerous and Unreliable, I don't know what is.......So Toyota is ASIAN if I am not mistaken last time I looked on a map. Secondly, If Asian cars are so good, then why Did Datsun change their name to Nissan? I believe it was partly to do with them being Rust buckets. How short some peoples memories are. Yes I do have a Merc, My 2nd one and very happy with it. But I have also had Vauxhalls, Peugeots, Citroens, Renaults, Audi's, Fords and yes a Datsun. There is not one car that was any better or worse than any other make or model and used to do 50,000 miles a year. Yes they all have design faults, but the main thing is they are rectified under warranty. Vauxhalls are having a problem at the moment with the Zafira and Corsa catching fire......I don't see you criticizing them. I think you are just anti German cars lol. Have a nice day :-)
