McLaren’s 720S, the new Super Series car replacing the 650S and the first car in the P14 model family, has entered production.
The 720S starts at £208,600, which is £8600 more than the 650S it replaces, although if a 'Long Tail' model is produced, it’s likely to cost in excess of £270,000. The McLaren 720S Velocity, a demonstrator model created to showcase the personalisation options available, costs £335,000.
McLaren’s newest model sits between its Sports Series cars – the 540C, 570GT and 570S - and beneath the now out of production P1, ahead of the brand’s resurrection of the new, three-seat F1 in 2019.
The 720S was revealed at the Geneva motor show in March, although it had been spotted testing a number of times before its unveiling.
A launch edition, limited to 400 units, has sold out already, while McLaren expects to sell a further 800 this year – 72 have been registered in the UK so far – and 1500 per year from 2018 onwards. This will max out McLaren’s intended 4500 units per year production capacity but still keeps the brand 2500 short of Ferrari’s 7000-car annual production cap.
Just before the Super Series exited production, McLaren Automotive celebrated its 10,00th car – a 570S – at the end of 2016.
