Aston Martin is recalling 3973 Aston Martin DB11s in order to fix a potential issue with their steering column that could cause unintended firing of the airbag.
The affected part, a clock spring in the steering column that can break, is supplied by Daimler thanks to the company’s tech tie-up with Aston Martin.
If the spring breaks, it can trigger an airbag warning light. If certain wiring components are not earthed sufficiently, this could cause the driver’s airbag to deploy from an electrostatic charge.
It has been fitted to DB11s produced between November 2015 and December 2017.
No incidents relating to the issue have been reported, but an Aston Martin spokesman told Autocar that the brand it is carrying out “precautionary” work as part of its “commitment to safety and customer satisfaction”.
They said the remedial work takes approximately 1.8 hours (108 minutes) to complete and is being “carried out with no charge to the customer by their local Aston Martin dealer”.
Aston Martin was first made aware of the issue by Daimler back in October 2017, when it launched an investigation and found that some of its DB11 models could be affected.
Daimler recalled 400,000 Mercedes-Benz cars last year for the same issue. A-Class, B-Class, C-Class, E-Class, CLA, GLA and GLC models built between November 2011 and July 2017 were affected. The GLK, predecessor to the GLC, was also affected, but this model was never sold in the UK.

Aston's reputation is being ruined by poor German quality
It was inevitable this was going to happen the moment Aston Martin entered in to a technical tie up with Daimler. Yet again we're seeing the so-called fabled German quality come up short yet again. German build, quality and engineering & technical prowess is a myth, they're one of the most unreliable cars and car components around. Mark my words, we'll see some of the Mercedes-AMG V8 engines develop problems in the DB11 and new Vantage in the not too distant future. Until this tie-up Aston Martin had no major issues whatsoever. It's such a shame Aston Martine didn't enter in to a tie up with a company which has much better quality compenents and much better engines.
Without Mercedes parts bin AM would still use Fords parts bin

Priceless? My ‘09 Aston V8 Vantage has been absolutely reliable over the 8.5 years I’ve owned it. I cannot say the same about any of the Mercedes-Benzes I’ve had, none of which I’ve kept more than just 4 years, and which have ranged from fairly reliable to appallingly UNreliable.
Protecting Aston Martin?
It's interesting how Daimler have been named as normally the manufacturer of a fault compenent are very rarely named and shamed. Were it not them supplying the part, would any other firm have been mentioned? Sure, it's a shame the part is defective and yes, it shouldn't have failed, but was Daimer mentioned specifically in order to protect Aston?
