It’s a dangerous game, judging a new car based on one of the examples that rolled out onto the stage at its launch event.
As is the norm, the new Mercedes A-Classes on display at the Amsterdam reveal were all high spec and - most likely - hand finished. They even got a feather duster and shine applied every few minutes, just to make sure they looked their best.
Initial reaction to the exterior on social media revealed immediate divisions. Some loved it, some hated it. The majority of the latter, it seemed, were pining for the Mercedes of yesteryear, which made solid, dependable and - dare I say it - staid saloons for the old and older.
To expect the A-Class to meet those needs seems a bit much to me. As boss Dieter Zetsche said, “When we revealed the last car people thought we had pushed too far. The sales of it rose to a high in its final year. You can’t say that about many cars.”

So no surprise that the exterior has the hallmarks of a reworking of the previous generation of car. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it and all that. Marmite it may be, but the stats don’t lie - be they the sales figures, the sales mix (buyers are 10 years younger on average than your standard Mercedes customer) or gender ratio (4/10 buyers are women).
The fireworks, though, lie on the inside, and - less superficially - what lies within the electronic systems. Mercedes has carved out a niche for making some of the most desirable interiors in the business, and so long as a cutting-edge look is your thing, and you pay up for the largest screens, the A-Class delivers again.

A once special brand
I really used to admire Mercedes many years ago when I felt they were cars that justified their priced, when you bought something that was beautifully over engineered and felt like a quality product with some amazing examples of attention to detail. And while not all of their models may have been the best cars in their respective classes, it didn't really matter because when you bought a Mercedes you were buying something special. Then it all went wrong when they decided to forget about quality and reliability in the mid 1990s by cutting costs while they also started chasing volume sales with new model after new model. And while the quality is almost back today, it's still not a return to form, while reliability still isn't the best. And with the plethora of models that Mercedes now produces, in addtion to a myriad of trim levels, the brand just doesn't do much for me anymore. Sure, Mercedes are in the business to make money and sell as many cars as they can but the magic has long since gone. Only the current S Class, I think, remains the only car in their range that stands testament to Mercedes once reverred core values. Everything else is just being made to make profits. The same, perhaps, could be said about BMW and Audi to some degree.

It's a bit the same for BMW.
Several years ago, Mercedes has something special. The interiors were more austere than today's but more Mercedes, quieter than the competitors. It couldn't be confounded with other brands. Until the 90's I would say.
This looks like a Korean
This looks like a Korean hatchback with some Merc badges stuck on it.
But it will sell, because it has Merc badges stuck on it. Merc in this country seem to have the marketing sweet spot with the 'must have' brigade.

Yeah, we re real mugs for that in this country, Apple is another example, bad products at silly prices but people buy em cos theyre snobs and cos of the "must have" appeal.
The interior is one the most
The interior is one the most cheap, naff and tacky looking I ve ever seen, particularly the "digital" dash, with its fake analogue dials complete with fake shine, la la Windows XP. Horrid.
