BMW has released the M4 Convertible Edition 30 Jahre, as a celebration of three decades of drop-top M-car production.
The M4 Convertible Edition 30 Jahre is marked out by grey alloy wheels and badging across the car’s interior, including a plaque on the dashboard.
Three hundred are being released worldwide, although the UK will only get 30 of these. The special edition will get an exclusive paint colour to boot, this dark grey colour joins Macao Blue in the two-colour palette, with the latter being a nod to the first M3 convertible, launched in 1988.
The model is based on the M4 Competition Pack, which boosts the standard M4’s 425bhp to 444bhp - the same as the new Audi RS5. Torque stands at 406lb ft (37 lb ft down on the Audi) and 0-62mph passes in 4.5sec (0.6sec slower than the RS5 Coupé), but the folding hard-top M4 is 175kg heavier. Top speed is limited to 155mph.
Being based on the M4 Competition Pack also adds an M exhaust and adaptive suspension. Pricing starts at £76,675 for the 30 Jahre edition - £11,295 more than the M4 Competition Package, and £13,495 more than the standard M4 Cabriolet, but £12,455 less than the more hardcore M4 CS.
BMW Unlike the M3, the M4 will not be axed as the new WLTP emissions testing system looms - BMW clarified that the M4 will be rehomologated and fitted with a new particulate filter, after a sales hiatus of ‘a couple of months’ to carry out the tweaks. The car’s performance will not be affected.
The M4 outsells the M3 by more than two to one - 2400 versus 1100 in 2017 - although less than a third of these were convertibles. The new M3 will arrive in 2020, with boosted power and a new look. The first look we’ll get at the new 3 Series will be at the Paris motor show later this year.
