The 2018 Festival of Speed has finished its second day.
Goodwood saw plenty of action on Friday, with cars taking to the iconic hill climb course, a busy rally circuit and a supercar paddock filled with fans eager to get up close and personal with million-pound-plus machines.
If you couldn’t be there, don’t worry: we’ve gathered our favourite moments from the Festival, snapped by Autocar photographers Luc Lacey and Stan Paper. Click through to see exactly what makes Goodwood such a highlight of the motoring year.
First up, Subaru's 2002 Impreza WRC S8 - Petter Solberg couldn't pilot it to an overall WRC win, but managed to secure Rally GB from behind the wheel.

The dangers of the Goodwood Hill Climb
It's not just hay bales and the notorious flint wall that drivers have to look out for while attempting the Hill Climb - there's also the local wildlife to keep in mind.

Roborace autonomous racer
With a computer-controlled AI brain and lots of sensors, Roborace represents a new era of motorsport - and Friday marked the first day it drove the hill climb completely unassisted. A world first, and potentially a sign of things to come.

Be it two wheels or four, spectators were treated to some incredible displays of skill and vehicle control.

MG Metro 6R4
Goodwood's Forest rally stage is no stranger to dirt and dust, but with the UK going through an unseasonable heatwave, the usually lush green grass of the Goodwood estate looked startlingly similar to a desert itself. Luckily the cars, including this 1986 MG Metro 6R4 kept to the course.

Volkswagen ID R
Fresh from a record-setting Pikes Peak hill climb ascent, Volkswagen's electric ID R racer took to the Goodwood route for a series of demonstration laps. It is expected to tackle the electric vehicle hill climb record at some point over the weekend.

Ferrari F150 Italia
It caused a bit of controversy with its name (Ford took offense to Ferrari using the name of its best-selling pickup truck) and didn't have much luck on the track, either, winning only one race of the 2011 season.

Fan meets racer
Festival of Speed spectators are lucky enough to rub shoulders with racing royalty just about every day here at Goodwood, but not usually while the drivers are on the hill climb itself.

1995 McLaren F1 GTR
The overall winner of Le Mans 1995, the McLaren F1 GTR completed 298 laps over 24 hours of gruelling racing - with F1 GTRs also placing third, fourth and fifth.

A hot day for leather
Drivers' overalls aren't exactly easy to wear in the middle of a heatwave, but the classic bike riders had it even worse under all the leather.

It's easy to forget just how complex a modern Formula 1 car truly is, but this steering wheel overflowing with buttons acts as a good reminder.

This one-off livery was a departure from Renault's usual F1 yellow colours.

Fernando Alonso had a tight grip on the 2012 F1 title, but Sebastian Bettel managed to win out overall. FB8 was so succesful it put Red Bull on the front foot for the 2013 season too.

BAC Mono
Essentially a single-seat racecar you can legally drive on the road, the Mono is every bit as quick as it looks, thanks to a 2.3-litre four cylinder engine developing 285bhp.

Autographs
Fans were regularly camped outside the driver's lounge with pen and paper in hand, but some drivers found time before their hill climb attempt to give their signature.

Porsche scrubs the corner
With the grass rapidly becoming a dust bowl, many drivers took the opportunity to cut a corner or two and kick up clouds of the stuff - it may not be quick, but it looks good in photos, which is what really counts.

Four wheel drive and a boosted ride height turned the Porsche 911 into a rally-ready machine that racked up several fastest stage wins of the Paris-Dakar in 1984, as well as an overall rally win.

Not everything was ready to take on the hill climb when called upon, but if ever there was a place you'd want to break down, Goodwood is it.

Clouds threatened to cast a shadow on proceedings early in the morning, but the warm weather won out and the sun shone for the rest of the day.

Ferrari was supposed to make 100 road-going examples of the 250 GTO in order to race it - but somehow got away with just 39.

Toyota's most succesful rally car to date is at home on the Goodwood Forest Rally stage - taking a massive leap over the jump well in its stride.

This was one of the fastest cars in the world in its day, reaching 132km/h top speeds in one French race.

Immensely fast and agile, yes, but modern F1 cars like this Red Bull are wide - not what you want on a narrow hill climb course.

This 1970 race winner was a reversal of fortune for BRM, who had struggled in previous years after Formula One moved to 3.0-litre engines.

The birth of stage rallying
Once rallying moved to shorter special stages, instead of long cross-country epics, the technology rapidly began to evolve - along with the speeds experienced by the drivers.

Regularly challenging for the Formula One drivers' title throughout its lifetime, the M23 saw Emerson Fittipaldi and James Hunt both take home the gold.
