Electrified variant of SUV to go on sale in June with 26-mile electric-only range and prices starting from around £55,000

The new plug-in hybrid version of the Audi Q5 SUV will go on sale in the UK at the start of June, priced from around £55,000.

Audi says the model, which will be labelled the Q5 55 TFSI e Quattro, features a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine mated to an electric motor powered by a 14.1kWh lithium ion battery. Working together the two units can deliver 362bhp, with a top speed of 148mph and a 0-62mph time of 5.3 seconds.

The Q5 will be capable of covering 26 miles on electric-only power, with a top electric-only speed of 84mph. Audi quotes a combined fuel economy of 113mpg.

The Q5 55 TFSI e Quattro will go on sale in the UK for around £55,000. While orders may be placed at the beginning of June, deliveries are scheduled for the last quarter of the year.

The model will be supplied as standard with a compact charging system featuring cables for both household and industrial outlets. Audi says that through a household 220V outlet, the Q5 can be fully charged from empty in around six hours.

Audi has previously used the E-tron branding for plug-in hybrid variants, but with that nomenclature now reserved for electric cars it has instead gone with the simpler 'TFSI e' tag.

The Q5 TFSI e was shown at the Geneva motor show in March this year, along with hybrid versions of the A6, A7 and A8.

Audi replaces the best-selling Q5 SUV with a model very much on the same theme, but does more sophistication make it a more compelling option than the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC or the Volvo XC60?
