Subaru previews second-generation of its AWD estate, with promise of 'grand touring' driver pleasure and comfort

Subaru has revealed the new Subaru Levorg Prototype at the Tokyo motor show, with a promise that the second generation of its four-wheel-drive estate will offer “a truly pleasing driving experience”.

The new machine is built on the Subaru Global Platform and is powered by a newly developed 1.8-litre turbocharged engine. It is due to go on sale in Japan in the second half of next year and, while not confirmed, is set to be rolled out worldwide after that. Subaru says it has developed the Levorg on a “Grand Touring philosophy”, with a focus on comfort, safety and enjoyment for long journeys.

The new car has been designed to showcase bolder styling that reflects the latest version of Subaru’s ‘Dynamic x Solid’ design language, with the firm claiming that it "has been developed as a symbolic model of the new generation of Subaru".

The Levorg Prototype is fitted with the latest version of the the firm’s direct injection boxer powerplant. The engine has been developed to showcase lean-burn technology, which Subaru claims balances acceleration and environmental performance, while also offering strong torque. The firm has yet to reveal any performance figures.

The new Levorg utilises a full inner frame construction chassis, which is designed for maximum body rigidity. The machine also features the latest version of Subaru’s EyeSight driver assistance system, which utilises a new wide-angle stereo camera and four radar systems, along with information gathered from high-definition mapping. That allows for systems such as pre-collision braking, automatic speed adjustment heading into corners and hands-free driving in heavy traffic.

The car also offers a range of connected services, the first time they have been offered on a Subaru model in Japan.

Subaru has given no information on when the new Levorg will be launched in markets beyond Japan. The first generation model went on sale in 2014 in Japan, and was launched in European markets the following year.

Not for the UK?

Another niche Subaru for the UK market to ignore?
Best get this over to the USA where they can mop up the compact station wagon market along with the Outback.

Not for the UK?

There is a good chance that LM450could be right about at least the more powerful 1.8 engine not making it to Europe, let alone the UK. After all, the highly desirable 296 BHP 2.0 STI version wasn't even on the grey import list for us.

But the smaller 1.5 offers virtually the same output as the late 1.6 (both offer better shove than the current 2.0 version) and if Subaru do sanction the 1.8 version for sale here, I will be seriously considering replacing my current Levorg for the new model.

After 7 years and more, a vast number of Subaru's will still be running compared to their equivilant higher selling Audi's BMW's and Mercs.

I had a 30.R Spec B Sports Tourer that I bought new, a fantastic car one of the best I have ever owned, (yes I have owned more expensive, and more "prestige" vehicles) and Subaru have failed to come up with a similar spec replacement, and until the do, I will pass, it was a brilliant allround package, at a decent price with bullet proof reliabilty and great dealers.

Don’t forget the engine!

I also wanted the 2.0t 296 bhp Levorg which never arrived in the UK. I run the 1.6 GT which is ok with a reasonable amount of low down torque. Great tourer. The 1.8t would certainly be on my shortlist even with the CVT. The current range of engines in the UK are just too underpowered and detract from fantastically safe and reliable cars.

Stupid name.

Is it named in tribute to the mountaineer Ludwig Vörg, or because it spells "grovel" backwards?

Either way, it's a Legacy Estate, right?

Turbo'd

Yippee, new 1.8t, no more wheezy NA engine with a whiney CVT.  The Auto gods have been listening!

It will still be CVT, its the only gearbox Subaru eyesight safety systems work with, but the Subaru CVT is one of the best on the market, and isnt whiney, perhaps you should try it.

Only CVT then?

The engines not out yet so how do you know what gearbox will be on it?

As long as there's a manual option as well I won't care to much about CVT. As to noisy CVTs :- Seen videos and read reviews from professionals, you should read more !
