There are those who believe that Charles Leclerc’s pace, self-deprecation and humility are moving him ahead of Max Verstappen as F1’s next-gen star.
Verstappen detractors point to his performance in Mexico. On provisional pole after his first Q3 run, nobody had improved upon his lap when Valtteri Bottas crashed at the final corner, bringing out yellow flags.
The rules dictate that in such circumstances a driver must slow demonstrably. Max though, improved his lap time. The result was predictable: a three-place grid penalty.
Then he hung himself in the post-qualifying press conference. Did he slow down? “It didn’t look like it, did it?” Why didn’t he slow down? “We know what we’re doing…” It smacked of arrogance, as if the rules didn’t apply to him.
Then, with the quickest car, he tried to win the race at the first corner, hit Hamilton, and ended up more than a minute behind in a race-winning car.
Max can do no wrong in the eyes of F1’s fans, who voted him ‘Driver of the Day.’ Again. All he has to do, it seems, is show up… To many in the paddock though, Muppet of the Weekend was more appropriate.
Five years in, should he be a bit more savvy?

The ONLY contest would be to have...
the three best drivers - Lewis, Max and Charles - drive in the same team, piloting the same F1 car, don't we all think? Max is getting impatient because after entering F1 already four years ago, he wants to get a realistic shot at the title. It's that simple.
Coming of age......
Yes, his mouth gets in the way sometimes, he calls a spade a spade, doesn't hold back for anyone, there have been other drivers over the decades who've jumped in with both feet, anyone remember Hamilton's first year?, he was a bit over confident shall we say, well, Verstappen could be seen this way, and of course it revolves around being in a competitive car because no matter how great a driver you are, if your car is a bag bolts you ain't going to be champ driving it, when will Verstappen, LeClerc, Norris take over the top driver slots?, and what will that depend on?...hmmmm
A good driver...
...can work wonders with a shite car, a shite driver with a good car on the otherhand...
Max is good in an arrogant Schumacher way, Hamilton is very good in every way, Le Clerc has yet to properly make his mark but is showing promise on and off the track. Norris, Gasley and Albon are well worth a watch over the next few seasons.
What do you expect...
..when you got a chump like Christian Horner telling the world you are the "best driver in the world"despite the fact that we are living in the era of Lewis Hamilton and never showing a child the errors if it's ways is not the best way to mature it.
What have you achieved in your career...
that enables you to label Horner a "chump". Judgemental nonsense that has been put like its originator, in its place...last.
