Autocar's sister brand What Car? delves deep into the UK car market to help you get the lowest prices on your next car.
What Car? Target Price calculates the fair price consumers should pay when choosing their next car.
The data is central to the all-new whatcar.com – a purpose built e-commerce platform connecting 20 million potential car buyers to a network of car retailers across the UK.
August proved to be a bumper month for discounts, though, with savings spiking by 2.3% compared with the last quarter. What Car? Target Price mystery shoppers found almost 1500 models available with savings between 10% and 30% off list price during the month. Here’s our guide to Britain’s most discounted cars:

10: Volkswagen Golf SV - 1.5 TSI 150 GT Evo DSG
On the road price: £27,870
What Car? Target Price: £22,731
Discount: 18.44%
What Car? says:
The Golf SV offers families a compelling combination of space, a decent drive, excellent build quality and a range of frugal engines. The addition of technology such as automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, park assist and pedestrian monitoring will prove popular with safety-conscious families, too. It’s little wonder that the Golf SV scored the maximum five stars in its Euro NCAP crash test.

And yet its place in the overall car market, as with all MPVs, seems to be evaporating at a rapid rate. Even if we limit the Golf SV’s competition to Volkswagen's own range, the Golf Estate offers more boot space, the T-Roc is more stylish and the Tiguan Allspace has seven seats. MPV rivals such as the Citroën C4 Picasso offer slightly more flexibility inside, too. Note: Manual gearbox version pictured.

Citroën C4 Spacetourer - 2.0 Blue HDi 160 Flair EAT8
On the road price: £30,285
What Car? Target Price: £24,562
Discount: 18.90%
What Car? says:
The Citroën Grand C4 Spacetourer is seriously practical and great value for money. The 2.0 BlueHDi 160 might be more powerful than the smaller 1.5, but it’s noisier and not as smooth, so isn’t worth the extra. However, it is the only engine offered with an automatic gearbox.

What Car? Target Price: £27,635
Discount: 21.42%
What Car? says:
Peugeot is in stock-clearance mode for the 508 ahead of the arrival of a new model. Motorway comfort and efficient engines are plus points for the car, but rear leg room isn’t great.

6: Mitsubishi Outlander - 2.2 DI-D 2
On the road price: £25,920
What Car? Target Price: £20,223
Discount: 21.98%
What Car? says:
The Mitsubishi Outlander wins no prizes for refinement or interior quality. Diesel engine is eager enough but can be a bit clattery, although it does settle when cruising. It’s available with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic gearbox. Automatic versions offer slightly less pulling power, though.

5: Seat Toledo - 1.0 TSI 110 SE
On the road price: £17,330
What Car? Target Price: £13,516
Discount: 22.01%
What Car? says:
Based on an extended VW Polo platform, it lacks the sophisticated rear suspension of the Leon or VW Golf, body control is merely adequate and ride quality a little disappointing, proving rather too willing to let the presence of every-day lumps and bumps be felt in the cabin.

4: Mercedes-Benz SL - SL 400 AMG Line 9G-Tronic
On the road price: £77,395
What Car? Target Price: £60,314
Discount: 22.07%
What Car? says:
The Mercedes SL’s rivals may be sharper to drive, but none are quite as adaptable to any situation. This twin-turbocharged is found in the SL 400 and offers the best mix of performance and running costs. It makes a decent noise, too.

4: Mercedes-Benz SL - SL 400 AMG Line 9G-Tronic
On the road price: £77,395
What Car? Target Price: £60,314
Discount: 22.07%
AMG Line models may be the entry point to the range, but they’re well equipped. You get heated leather seats, a DAB radio, sat-nav, rear parking sensors, LED lights, 19in wheels and dual-zone climate control. You won’t need to add too many options to that.

3: Vauxhall Astra - 1.0T Ecotec SRi
On the road price: £21,210
What Car? Target Price: £16,385
Discount: 22.75%
What Car? says:
The Vauxhall Astra is a well-rounded, good-value family hatch that offers plenty of room at an affordable price. This engine may be smaller than the 1.4i but a turbocharger means it’s more powerful with 104bhp. It’s a more flexible unit that’s also cheaper to run. Start-stop technology means CO2 emissions are just 99g/km, with claimed fuel economy an impressive 64.2mpg. It’s well worth the relatively small extra cost it demands. An automatic gearbox is optional and makes it even cheaper to run.

2: Volkswagen Passat - 1.4 TSI S
On the road price: £22,195
What Car? Target Price: £17,019
Discount: 23.32%
What Car? says:
Classy, comfortable and refined, the Passat is a genuine rival to the established executive cars. The 1.4 is the cheapest engine option for the Passat and scores for its refined manners. Even so, we’d recommend spending a little extra on the more powerful yet more frugal 1.4 TSI 150 if you can.

2: Volkswagen Passat - 1.4 TSI S
On the road price: £22,195
What Car? Target Price: £17,019
Discount: 23.32%
Entry-level S trim is pretty sparsely equipped. It has air-con, 16in alloy wheels, a touchscreen infotainment system, digital radio and a USB socket, but it’s well worth spending the extra on the more lavishly equipped SE Business version, if possible.

1: Fiat Tipo - 1.4 Easy
On the road price: £14,320
What Car? Target Price: £10,515
Discount: 26.57%
What Car? says:
And the most heavily discounted car in Britain is... the Fiat Tipo 1.4 Easy. It's well equipped and spacious, but rivals are better to drive and classier inside. The entry-level petrol engine offers the cheapest way into Tipo ownership. It is, however, only slightly more fuel efficient than the more powerful turbocharged petrol and, although we've yet to try it, is likely to feel sluggish on the road. We'd recommend paying a bit extra for the 1.4 T-Jet.
