What is it?
This is the most powerful diesel in the Peugeot 3008 range, and until the automatic version comes out next year also the most expensive. Currently this newly uprated version of the 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine has been tuned to put out 150bhp and 250 lb ft of torque and drives through a six-speed manual box.
What’s it like?
Composed, punchy and comfortable. With peak torque available from just 2000rpm the engine endows the 3008 with good low-speed acceleration around town and ample overtaking ability.
It’s a fairly typical turbodiesel engine that works well in conjunction with the smooth (if long) gearshift and enhances the 3008’s practical nature. The only real problem is the cheaper and more economical 1.6-litre, 110bhp turbodiesel, which offers a less nose-heavy driving experience and plenty of poke for most people shopping in this segment.
Even so, the 150bhp motor is a good choice if you regularly carry a full complement of passengers, or even if you plan on doing a lot of motorway miles. Otherwise you get all the benefits of the accurate handling, spacious interior, broad forward visibility, huge boot and comprehensive equipment list for four figures less with the smaller engine.
Should I buy one?
The 3008 is more difficult to justify as soon as you start creeping into the price range of a low-spec 1.8 TDCi Ford S-Max. It may suffer from the MPV image and large dimensions that many 3008 buyers are trying to avoid, but also offers a better driving experience and seven seats.
Still, the 3008 handles accurately, rides comfortably and offers the kind of flexibility that should accommodate any small family with ease. With this engine it also promises to be a serene cruiser, but be sure you really need the extra power before paying the extra £1000 over a 1.6 HDi.
