Infiniti’s Sebastian Vettel-badged Infiniti FX ‘supercar SUV’ is to go into low-volume production

The Infiniti FX Vettel ‘supercar SUV’ is to go into low-volume production, the company has confirmed. The Infiniti FX Sebastian Vettel was first shown in concept form at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show in September, featuring engineering and aerodynamic upgrades tailored by the double Formula One world champion, who was involved in the car’s development.

The model is the first in a wider cooperation between Infiniti, its brand ambassador Vettel and the champion Red Bull Racing F1 team he races for. Infiniti boss Andy Palmer described the relationship as the equivalent of BMW’s M division and Mercedes’ AMG offshoot.

Upgrades over a stadard FX50 S on which the Vettel edition is based include a restyled grille, a carbonfibre front spoiler modelled on the front wing of a Formula One car, LED daytime running lights, carbonfibre wing mirrors and sills and a rear spoiler.

Power from the 5.0-litre V8 was upgraded to 414bhp and the speed limiter on the standard car removed allowing it to hit 300kph (186mph).

Palmer said: “Sebastian’s FX demonstrates we are able to do low volume specials and the FX Sebastian Vettel version is one of the first that will go to market.” Prices for the Infiniti FX Sebastian Vettel version are yet to be confirmed. The top-of-the-range FX50 S Premium costs £58,250, so a price tag of up to £75,000 is possible.

The Infiniti FX is an interesting alternative to the norm, but lacks space and comfort to compete in this class
