Audi's new DTM car will be powered by the same 454bhp V8 engine used in the current A4 racer

Audi has unveiled its new Audi A5-based racer, which will compete in the DTM series in 2012, at the Frankfurt motor show.

The upgraded car replaces the current A4 racer – which won the DTM title four times since 2004 - and features a carbonfibre monocoque enveloping a steel tube cage, a regulation prescribed for all DTM contenders.

At the back of the car sits a large rear wing for added downforce – much like the recently revealed BMW DTM racer – as well as a large front splitter and flared wheel arches, which house the big racing wheels. Under the bonnet, Audi will continue to use the current A4’s 454bhp V8 power plant, mated to Audi’s “proven” six-speed gearbox, according to the firm.

When talking of the DTM race series, head of Audi Motorsport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich said, “We’ve got exactly the right model for that in the A5. We’re convinced that we’ll be able to continue Audi’s success story with it in the DTM”.
