Renault has broken the front-wheel drive Nurburgring lap record in the new Renault Megane 265 Trophy, setting an 8min 7.97sec time that smashed the record held by the Megane R26R in 2008 by nine seconds.
The time was set in a standard road car by Laurent Hurgon, one of Renault's development drivers, on his second lap of the morning.

The Renault Megane 265 Trophy rides an the same chassis as the standard 250 Cup, but gets an extra 15bhp and 15lb ft of torque and new Bridgestone Potenza RE05a tyres.
Hurgon maintains that "the power upgrade and new tyres are both equally responsible for why we've managed such a fast time." Experience gleaned from over 500 laps of the Nordschleife also undoubtedly helped the Renault driver.
Only 50 examples of the Megane Renaultsport 265 Trophy will go on sale from £27,820 in the UK. Order books open in early July.
