GM will begin selling cars on internet auction site eBay today.

In total, 225 of GM's 250 California dealerships have agreed to take part in a pilot programme of sales, under which Chevrolet, Pontiac, GMC and Buick models will be sold.

Notably, Cadillacs are not being sold under the scheme, as GM tries to ensure that the buying process retains an air of exclusivity.

Both 'Buy it now' and bid based auctions will be held, with each sale handled by an individual dealership. In addition, an online finance calculator will allow people to gain access to finance before bidding.

The trial is scheduled to expire on 8 September, after which GM will decide whether to carry on with the scheme.
