Soft-top supercar will ditch gullwing doors

This is the Mercedes SLS AMG convertible, which has begun testing ahead of an expected on-sale date in 2011 or 2012.

The soft-top will be powered by the same 563bhp 6.2-litre V8 with 479lb ft of torque as the coupe, which will be unveiled at this year's Frankfurt motor show and go on sale next year.

That should mean the Mercedes SLS AMG convertible records a 0-62mph time of around four seconds, up from the coupe's 3.8s, because of the roof mechanism and the extra body strengthening.

The pictures clearly show that the Mercedes SLS convertible has traditional door openings as opposed to the gullwing doors of the coupe.

The 300SL, which is regarded as the SLS's spiritual predecessor, followed the same arrangement.

Prices for the convertible are expected to start at around £175,000, ten per cent higher than the coupe.
