Audi is breaking US resistance to diesels with its super-powerful V12 diesel

How to break down American resistance to diesel engines? Obvious, really, at least in Audi's mind. Show them a 6.0-litre diesel engine with more cylinders, power and torque than some of the most-celebrated 'Detroit Iron' on the planet.

Audi chose Detroit to reveal its worst-kept secret: that it would make the V12 TDI engine – which can push the mighty Q7 soft-roader to a top speed of 155mph, accelerate it from 0-62 mph in just 5.5 seconds, and still returns 23.7mpg on the combined cycle.

No sign yet of when the engine will enter production, though Audi reckons its 3.0-litre TDI V6, using ultra-clean Blue-Tec technology, can make important US progress when launched late next year.

The Q7 is accomplished, but doesn’t feel as at home on UK roads as more refined rivals like the Range Rover Sport and BMW X5
