BMW has extended its estate range by installing its entry-level 2.0-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel engines. Badged as 318i and 318d Tourings, they are priced from £21,645 and £24,015 respectively.
The diesel engine costs £2370 more than the petrol, but has a fair turn of real-world speed thanks to its 206lb ft of torque. It is also frugal: BMW claims 48mpg on the combined cycle; its CO2 emissions of 155 g/km place it in Band D for Vehicle Excise Duty.
The 126bhp petrol, built at BMW’s Ham’s Hall plant near Birmingham, gets to 60mph in 10.4 seconds, the diesel taking 10.9 seconds. The petrol can’t match the diesel’s economy or emissions performance, however: 37mpg combined and 182 g/km are the figures.
Standard equipment on both models includes 16-inch alloys, a six-speed manual gearbox, air conditioning and a single CD player. Prices range up to £22,675 and £25,045 for the SE versions of the petrol and diesel models; the M Sport versions cost a daunting £24,965 and £27,335 respectively.
