Currently reading: VW Ragster: it's the next Beetle

Volkswagen’s latest concept car, revealed at the Detroit Motor Show, is claimed to preview the updated Beetle, due in 2007. The Ragster hints at a new targa-style roof structure for Volkswagen’s retro-styled hatchback as well as providing clues as to how the car’s distinctive design, originally drawn back in 1993, could be refreshed. Described as a cross between a rag-top and speedster, the car’s A-pillars have been shortened by 90mm over the Beetle Cabriolet and are mated to a special U-shaped roof structure that incorporates a cloth sunroof. More relevant is the styling, which is likely to be seen on the refreshed Beetle. It has new bumpers, subtle creases in the wings and reworked head- and taillamps. Inside there are hard-shell seats and an ignition starter button.
