The next generation of Mini John Cooper Works models will adopt a new 2.0-litre four-cylinder direct injection petrol engine developing “around 230bhp”, sources close to the BMW-owned company have revealed.
The new engine is planned to replace the existing turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder direct injection unit, which produces 215bhp in the recently launched Mini John Cooper Works Paceman.
The new 2.0-litre engine earmarked for future John Cooper Works models is one in a number of variants of in BMW’s newly unveiled B48 engine family.
In standard form, the aluminium block unit delivers 189bhp in the Mini Cooper S hatchback. In a higher state of tune, it is planned to provide upcoming John Cooper Works versions of the new Mini hatchback and five-door – due to be unveiled at the 2015 Detroit motor show – with 231bhp and 258lb ft of torque.
This represents a 16bhp and 52lb ft increase on the old 1.6-litre engine, promising to provide future John Cooper Works models with added performance potential.
As in the Cooper S hatchback, the new 2.0-litre engines will be mated to either a new six-speed manual or updated six-speed automatic gearbox.
