The Lamborghini Asterion is a design "test" as well as a preview of future powertrain technology, according to Audi technical chief Ulrich Hackenberg.
His comments raise the possibility that Lamborghini is investigating adding a GT model its range.
The Asterion is officially designed to show a high-performance hybrid powertrain. It uses a "super-sports car chassis with a GT design that is famous from Lamborghini's history", according to Hackenberg.
He said it was hard to present technology in an "emotional" way: "You need to be eye catching and different. The GT is a different design, and as a design concept it shows another way... it's a test."
An SUV was widely expected to be Lamborghini's next model in 2017, but Hackenberg wouldn't be drawn on its progress, saying "that's another interesting story".
His comment could be interpreted that Lamborghini may choose instead to expand its range with a GT instead of an SUV.
