Luton manufacturer celebrates renewed investment at Ellesmere Port as the 1800-strong workforce gears up to start production of the new Astra

Vauxhall has today celebrated the five millionth car to be made at its Ellesmere Port factory.

The Luton-based manufacturer began producing cars at the site in 1964, with notable models made at the site including the original Viva, the Chevette and all six generations of the Astra.

Currently the plant's 1800-strong workforce helps to produce a new car every two minutes. Total annual output over the past 50 years has stood at an average of 100,000 units.

The plant is currently gearing up to produce the new Astra, which is scheduled to come to market at the end of next year. Production of the new model was awarded to the factory earlier this year, and is due to begin in August 2015.

An additional 300 staff are being taken on at the site to cope with demand, while parent company GM is investing £140 million to secure the factory's future into the middle of the next decade.

This is great for Britain and Vauxhall, I'm a bit sceptical where it says to keep up with demand though. the last time i checked the current Astra isnt doing too well in the sales charts against the competition, how do they know the next Astra will be more in demand. great work anyway, i have done the ellesmere port tour, a great insight and throughly enjoyable it was too. keep up the good work.

Agreed... although I guess the Astra remains in the Top 10 despite being beaten to the top few positions by Golfs and Focuses.

Astra GTE

So Vauxhall drive their Astra GTEs just like many a joy-rider did back in the day? Yes 5,000,000 and counting is good going!

It's an achievement that has provided many British jobs over years and knocked out some pretty good cars to. Shut-up quite a few doom mongers over the years too.
