The Golf R-line features sporty cosmetic changes and is priced from £24,190

The Volkswagen Golf’s new R-line trim level is on sale now, priced between £24,190 and £26,765, with first deliveries set for March.

The new specification features sporty cosmetic changes and comes with the choice of VW’s 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine or 2.0-litre TDI diesel.

R-line sits above the existing GT trim and includes sat-nav and sports suspension, as well as a rear spoiler, side skirts, radiator grille, R-line front bumper and fog lights, R-line rear bumper and diffuser and 17-inch alloy wheels.

Interior changes include stainless steel pedals and front door sills, new interior trim, sports seats, leather gearknob and leather-covered sports steering wheel.

A six-speed manual gearbox comes as standard on all models, and a seven-speed DSG is available as an optional extra. The three-door petrol manual and five-door petrol DSG return a claimed fuel economy of 60.1mpg, and the three and five-door diesel manuals return a claimed 68.9mpg.

Both engines sit in tax band B or C, with CO2 emissions ranging from 109-112g/km for the petrol engine and 106-119g/km for the diesel.

The 148bhp 1.4-litre petrol-engined R-line starts at £24,190 for the three-door version, rising to £26,260 for the five-door with DSG gearbox, while the 2.0-litre diesel is priced from £24,695, with the top priced five-door DSG coming in at £26,765.

I wonder if it will do better

I wonder if it will do better than the Polo R-Line. VW seemed to struggle to sell it (nearly new ones were hanging around the dealerships for ages) and they quietly discontinued it. I quite liked it, though, as it was one of the few pre-facelift models you could get with the 1.2tsi engine and 6 speed box, and the sporting additions made it look more interesting.

What lessened the Polo R-Line was Volkswagen UK offering the "R-Line Style" version, which was available as the 60 hp 1.2 non-turbo car. There's a lot of them around, but very few genuine 1.2 TSI R-Line models. But the residuals have been pretty good on the R-LIne, which is why I've traded mine in for a new Polo GTI.

In Germany R-Line is offered an option pack, rather than specifically as standalone trim levels. Obviously VW UK have a different marketing idea.

Also,

I think that's probably the COD Petrol engine but I'm surprized it's not knocking out 150 hp which is the output of the engine when put in Audi's range
