Currently reading: Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce costs from £37,935

Alfa Romeo's warm Giulia has made it to the UK, with a 276bhp, 290lb ft, 2.0-litre petrol engine and eight-speed auto 'box

The Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce is now being sold in the UK, starting at £37,935.

Despite doubts about whether Alfa Romeo would bring the Veloce to the UK, it was given the green light, although doesn't get the all-wheel drive of the European-spec Veloce and is only available in rear-wheel drive.

Under the bonnet is a spec-exclusive 2.0-litre petrol engine which produces 276bhp and 290lb ft, while returning a claimed 46.3mpg and emitting 141g/km CO2. Performance is watered down compared to the hot Quadrifoglio variant; 0-62mph comes in 5.7sec and top speed is 149mph, compared with the Quadrifoglio's 3.9sec and 191mph.

The Veloce gets exclusive bumper styling, as well as the Giulia Quadrifoglio's characteristic alloys. A more aggressive rear diffuser incorporates the Giulia Veloce's two exhausts, and it gets tinted rear windows and xenon headlights as standard. Alfa Romeo has also given the Veloce an exclusive blue paint colour.

Being a high-spec Giulia, dual-zone climate control, a drive mode selector, 8.8in infotainment system and a host of safety tech like autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning and cruise control all come as standard.

The wrong price.....?!

£38K.....?........that is way to much,it only has 276 bhp,for five grand less your in a Focus RS or a Civic type-R,this Car would be more competitive at £32K,really upset BMW for instance.

Costs more than the equivalent BMW, but so much more desirable

This is about £4500 - £5000 more than the equivalent 3 Series, the 330i which has less power, but it's barely £1k cheaper than the much more powerful, 320bhp 340i. Still, with those looks inside and out, the Alfa is a damn sight more desirable than the 3 Series, or indeed the equivalent A4 or C Class, and would get my custom any day of the week.

Looks aren't everything, and, how does it handle?,will it be reliable?,and residuals, three years from now, what will it be worth?.

Stupid Tax £40K

I just configured one in this blue + wheels + one other option = £40,300. So you pay an extra £1,500 in tax just to add a £200 low cost option! Stupid cliff edge tax.

This new tax system is as ludicrous as the poll tax was back in the day. And what it won't account for is if one day, for example, a dealer has a brand new car on sale for £40k and then the next day, they decide to know a few grand off off the price. You can imagine the customer who paid full price would be pretty hacked off. A complete and utter joke of a tax system that does nothing to encourage people to buy more environmentally friendly cars and is a crass attempt to redress the obvious failings of the previous car tax system which was purely based on CO2 emissions. It's now also a motoring version of council tax - the more your car is, the more tax you pay.

You will be safe at £40,300, as the first years road tax isnt part of the £40k, but i agree, very stupid tax.
