Transport for London says it will not renew Uber’s operating licence, which expires this month

Uber London will be blocked from operating in the capital from the start of October, unless it wins an appeal for Transport for London to renew its operating licence.

TfL plans to withhold the American ride hailing firm’s licence, which expires on 30 September, due to concerns over the company’s operational habits.

The government body responsible for London’s transport network said it considers Uber’s approach to “reporting serious criminal offences, how medical  certificates are obtained” and how security checks are obtained to have “security implications” for the public.

TfL also accused Uber of having used so-called Greyball software to block regulatory bodies from accessing its app to undertake law enforcement duties.

Under the Private Hire Vehicles (London) 1998 Act, Uber has 21 days to appeal the decision. Uber can operate as normal until its current licence expires.

Autocar has contacted Uber for a statement. The firm has not yet issued an official response.

A glimpse of life under Corbyn?

His loony left cronies have just taken thousands of workers jobs away to appease their taxi drivers union paymasters.

This decision is political.

Nowt to do with anything else.

On the other hand this will also secure hundreds of jobs at the London EV company, and gives the new Coventry factory a reason to exist.

What about the livelihoods of the thousands of drivers?!

Seriously? You can't just close an economy like that; Uber will not suffer as much as those who rely on them and have nothing else.

The share price will fall but the business is protected by their model of owning no vehicles. The drivers have suddenly lost an income and now own a car that they potentially didn't want in the first place. It feels like TfL are using this as a threat to get Uber to cooperate but this cost could be too high.

Please, somebody, tell me that I have misunderstood the situation.

What livelihood?

Uber drivers are so poorly paid they live on tax credits. It's the only way fares are kept low, by exploiting Terry Taxpayer as well as these largely foreign workers.

Well then, I just assumed... I've never taken an Uber before (provincial resident), probably should have kept out of the subject really but it seems that this "punishment" doesn't really effect Uber but more the drivers.

The company dont pay tax, treat their drivers terribly and ignore complaints of drivers acting improperly. Complaining that all the drivers will be out of work only serves to prove they arent 'self employed' as the company claim, they dont have another firm to go and work for nor can they go out on their own.

Hopefully this will force the company to address these issues as it is a revolution and its model is clearly part of the modern transport system, but that doesnt mean it should be exempt from behaving ethically and properly.
