Korean firm to preview forthcoming electric SUV and future innovations at technology show

Kia will showcase a new electric concept version of the forthcoming Niro EV SUV at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas next week.

The Korean firm has released a number of teaser images of the car but has so far revealed few specifics about it ahead of the show. The firm's press release only refers to the machine as an "all-electric concept car", although the Niro EV name can be clearly seen on the images.

Kia plans electric Niro and more SUV models

Kia says the concept will feature a “never-before-seen” human machine interface (HMI), along with a ‘motion graphic’ lighting system that will preview features with the 'potential' to be introduced in the coming years. That suggests not all the technology shown on the concept will necessarily be on the initial production version of the Niro EV.

The Kia Niro is already available in mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid firm. It is understood the electric version will use the same powertrain as sister firm Hyundai’s Hyundai Ioniq EV. The Ioniq is available with the same three types of powertrain.

Alongside the concept, Kia will use CES to preview a range of new technology, including its latest autonomous system developments. The firm's display, labelled 'Beyond Autonomous Driving' will feature three interactive cockpits that will highlight new driver assistance systems and HMI functions, along with what Kia claims to be the world’s first in-car 5G mobile data system.
