Skoda has revealed its new Vision X concept in design sketches, with the hybrid small SUV previewing a production model of a similar size that's due to arrive next year.
The Vision X is described as an 'urban SUV', hinting at the model’s on-road focus, akin to the Nissan Juke. It will enter production as the brand's third SUV line, sitting underneath the Karoq and Kodiaq.
Skoda confirmed that the model will use the styling theme of the Skoda Karoq and Skoda Kodiaq and take it to another market segment, so the production model is not likely to stray far from the Vision X's look.
The 20in alloys are likely to be made smaller, while the minimalist interior will be replaced by a more conventional dash, dominated by a central infotainment screen – a much smaller, built-in unit than the one on the concept.
Rather than being based on the Skoda Skoda Fabia, the Vision X will be built on the MQB A0 platform, which also underpins the Arona and Volkswagen T-Roc. The names Amiq and Anuq have both been trademarked in the past, but would buck Skoda's new convention for production SUV names beginning with 'K' and ending in 'q'.
Engines are likely to be shared with the smaller cars in the Skoda range, so a mix of 1.0 and 1.5 TSI engines and the 1.6 TDI are to be expected. The Vision X's hybrid powertrain has yet to be used in any production models, however.
A facelifted Fabia will be on display alongside the Vision X at the Geneva motor show, but the small hatchback remains on the same platform. An MQB-based Fabia won’t arrive until at least 2021.
