Most powerful Bentley yet reaches 60mph in 3.4 seconds with a top speed of 209mph; soft-top variant also introduced

The Bentley Continental Supersports has been revealed, which is the company's fastest accelerating model yet, achieving 0-60mph in 3.4sec.

It will be a final swansong to the current second-generation Continental GT, which launched in 2011, ahead of an all-new version arriving in 2018.

With a top speed of 209mph, it is also the most powerful Bentley yet, with 700bhp on tap and 750lb ft between 2050 and 4500rpm.

By comparison, rival, the new Aston Martin DB11, hits 62mph in 3.9secs (approximately 3.8secs for 0-60mph) with a top speed of 200mph.

Sitting alongside the coupe-bodied Supersports is the new Continental Supersports Convertible, which accelerates from 0-60mph in 3.7secs and hits a top speed of 205mph.

Bentley claims the two cars are the fastest four-seat and four-seat convertible cars in the world.

The car maker has redeveloped its W12 engine for the Supersports, giving the model higher-capacity turbochargers and a revised air-cooling system to create more boost - the result is an increase of 125bhp over the standard W12-powered Continental GT.

These revisions also mean an increase of 79bhp and 160lb ft over the 2009 Supersports model, a 10% power-to-weight improvement. Top speed has risen by 5mph and 0-60mph by 0.2secs.

It's also faster than both the hardcore GT3-R, launched in 2014, and the 635bhp Continental GT Speed.

The new Supersports variants use an updated torque converter, which, Bentley claims, locks up faster, optimising the abilities of the torque.

Carbon ceramic brakes are fitted behind lightweight 21-inch alloy wheels, which offer a 20kg weight saving in unsprung mass. Overall, the new Supersports is the lightest version of any Continental GT model yet produced.

Bentley has also focused on handling using an updated version of the torque vectoring system first seen on the Continental GT3-R, allowing individual front and rear wheel braking during acceleration out of corners to improve performance. The Supersports retains the rear-biased 60:40 torque split of the company’s all-wheel-drive system, but features lowered and stiffened dynamic suspension. Bentley says it retains “all of its luxurious ride quality”.

There are exterior tweaks for the range-topping Continental GT, including new front and rear bumpers, gloss-black tailpipe, dark-tint lights as well as black brightware.

The coupe version has an optional rear spoiler and Supersports badging, while the convertible gets a multi-layer hood and neckwarmer.

The car’s interior uses three colours, there’s are a new diamond-quilted design for seats and door panels and carbonfibre fascia panels.

Buyers can opt for a titanium exhaust as well as personalisation packs consisting of eight two-tone paint colours and door mirrors.

On sale in April this year, the coupe will cost £212,500 while the convertible will cost £233,800. A Bentley spokesman said a “very limited number will be made available” but would not divulge more details. When the GT3-R launched in 2014, only 300 units were produced.

Wolfgang Durheimer, Bentley boss, said: “The Supersports name is legendary at Bentley. From the very first Supersports of the 1920s, to the Continental Supersports of 2009 – and now with the third iteration of this iconic model – it is a name which excites, impassions and thrills. Only Bentley could create a car which blends immense performance and unrivalled luxury in this way.”

Speaking to Autocar recently about the brand’s performance focus, Durheimer said: “The GT3-R showed that there is scope for Bentley to produce limited numbers of cars with an absolute focus on performance. They cannot be core brand models as they inevitably sacrifice some luxury, but as focused cars that are true to Bentley's performance history, they absolutely fit.

“The fact that the GT3-R is already a collectors' item - sold out immediately and already rising values -tells you that our customers welcome such vehicles.”

"They cannot be core brand models as they inevitably sacrifice some luxury" Just as long as we have that straight then. ;-) The performance premium seems to be devaluing with the arrival of Tesla.

The interior is stunning - as

The interior is stunning - as one would expect. A work of craftsmanship.

But the exterior..... it's a little, how can I put it, 'Boy racer does Bentley' or 'Bentley by Halfords'.
