Vauxhall has wasted no time in adding some attitude to its new Zafira range. The 237bhp Zafira VXR is currently sharing the Geneva show stage with the new standard seven-seat Zafira. However, with its 18-inch alloy wheels, twin trapezoidal exhaust pipes, gaping honeycomb grilles and roof spoiler, there’s no doubt which will be attracting the crowds.
Vauxhall pioneered the fast MPV concept with the last Zafira GSi; this second-generation tearaway for the family man moves the game on considerably. Powered by the 237bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre engine from the forthcoming Astra VXR, its maker claims the new fast Zafira will hit 62mph in just 7.2 seconds and go on to 144mph.
Larger disc brakes should ensure equally powerful braking, while Vauxhall’s electronically variable dampers maximise cornering ability. Front seats are by Recaro, while the remaining five can be folded away using Vauxhall’s second-generation Flex7 system.
The Zafira VXR goes on sale in the UK in October from around £21,500.
