Hot version of Grandis ready to take on Zafira GSi

Mitsubishi is attempting to spice up the MPV sector with quicker versions of its new Grandis seven-seater, which goes on sale in Britain next spring for around £17,500.

The standard model is powered by a 2.4-litre MMIC engine, but Mitsubishi design boss Olivier Boulay is keen to produce a high-performance variant. 'The Grandis concept is sport and comfort together,' he said. 'Later we'll put in some stronger engines - I'd like to see us inject some Evo blood into it.'

At the other end of the scale, an eco-friendly version of the Grandis is scheduled to hit Japanese roads powered by a DaimlerChrysler hydrogen fuel cell. It mixes a 91bhp power output, 87mph top speed and range of 93 miles.

Mitsubishi claims this is its first step towards a fuel-cell production vehicle.
