Currently reading: Qoros 3 to undercut MG6

The Qoros 3 will be around £500 cheaper than the MG 6 when it goes on sale in China

The Qoros 3 Sedan will undercut the price of the MG 6 when it goes on sale in China in the coming months. The announcement was made at the Guangzhou motor show yesterday.

The six-strong Qoros 3 lineup starts from RMB 119,900 (£12144) in China, almost £500 less than the MG 6. Prices climb to RMB 167,900 (£17,006). No UK pricing has been set.

The firm’s first series-production model claims to represent a “new premium” class of car in its native market. It will be available with a choice of 1.6-litre petrol engines in naturally aspirated or turbocharged forms. A six-speed manual gearbox is available, but a six-speed dual-clutch automatic is expected to account for the bulk of sales.

The atmospheric engine develops 124bhp and 114lb ft, and when mated to the manual transmission, records a 11.6sec 0-62mph time. The turbocharged version produces 154bhp and 154lb ft, cutting acceleration to 9.7sec. Qoros claims fuel economy of up to 46mpg.

The chassis feature MacPherson struts at the front and a twist beam rear axle.

The Qoros 3 Sedan is 1839mm wide, 4615mm long and has a wheelbase of 2690mm, meaning that it straddles the dimensions of the MG 5 and MG 6. Qoros claims impressive cabin space, and an 8in touchscreen and cloud connectivity are among available features.

It was the first car to be developed in China to achieve a five-star Euro NCAP rating.

Qoros has also revealed a ‘Style Accessories Concept’ showcasing a range of accessories, including a bodykit and 18in alloy wheels, which will be available to order next year.

Earlier this month, Qoros opened its first dealer site in Nanjing. Bosses say further dealer and service sites are in development.

"Go on Qoros!!!!"

I couldn't agree more. For a start this looks much nicer than the MG, and secondly at least it is an honest car (i.e. not trying to be something it isn't - that "MG" is no more an MG than my VW Passat is a Rolls Royce).

Last chance saloon

Unless "Sedan" forms part of its official name, shouldn't a UK publication / site use the word saloon and not "sedan"? Just saying.

Qoros hoped to be a “premium” manufacturer of quality vehicles!

So for an extra £500 Chinese buyers of an MG6 get a bigger car with better suspension, and one that is much quicker. Makes the MG seem a bit of bargain (if you are Chinese).
The MG6 may be bigger, but is it “better” ? Qoros had hoped to establish themselves as a “premium” manufacturer, of quality vehicles . . . equivalent to those names of “premium” manufacturers with which we are familiar, Mercedes, BMW, Audi, etc.. You do NOT launch a new model that “claims to represent a ‘new premium’ class of car in its native market”, and price your new premium quality vehicle so that it “undercuts” on price the established Chinese manufactured product - about which the Chinese consumer is so dismissive!! The Chinese consumer much preferring (we are told), the premium, quality, vehicles from “western” manufacturers!

Premium in China

@ RCT V: You should understand that the 'premium' refers to a very divided market in which the Chinese-brand cars are seen as a lower class, so having a comparatively high-tech and modern 'Chinese' car is a big boost to this sector in the market. The likes of VW and Chevrolet sell mostly in a price sector above and the 'prestige' brands such as Audi and BMW are in a different league, even the locally assembled ones. Don't confuse 'premium' with 'prestige'!

The MG6 is in a narrow band of being as 'foreign' a brand as the only-for-China VWs, but being perceived as more of a domestic brand. This is why is doesn't sell well, as it has to be priced like a VW because of the cost of the modern foreign design, yet lacks the pulling power of the VW brand. The Chinese customer is as brand-aware as any Westerner.
